If you live in the City of Los Angeles and care about LA Parks, there is a hugely consequential measure on the November Ballot. Charter Measure PRK would significantly increase funding for parks – without raising taxes. As a result, we strongly urge a “yes” vote.
Background
For quite some time, the City of Los Angeles budget has allocated a tiny amount to the Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP), even as the need for recreation spaces has radically increased. More folks are looking to LA’s green spaces to get away from the hustle and bustle associated with city life, but the problem is… there’s limited space available.
What exactly is Measure PRK?
If approved, the RAP minimum budget allocation would double over the next 10 years. This increase would be achieved without raising taxes and would enable RAP to hire additional park rangers, improve park maintenance, and keep up with infrastructure needs such as repairing bathrooms and playgrounds. It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to give our parks the funding they need.
Currently, L.A. is ranked 93rd on the Trust for Public Land’s list of parks in the nation’s 100 most populous cities. We can do much better by passing this important measure!
