FoGP’s Summer Science Lecture Series

July 18, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

You may appreciate Los Angeles for Hollywood, but LA is also a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot with thousands of species of plants and animals including over 50 endangered species.

Both the City and County of LA are working to protect and enhance biodiversity and ecological health in the face of a global biodiversity crisis.

On Thursday, July 18, Dr. Cooper will be discussing recent studies examining how biodiversity is distributed across different Los Angeles neighborhoods, and how interventions like pocket parks along the LA River can enhance urban biodiversity and access. Cooper will also discuss how to support biodiversity in your homes and neighborhoods.

Dr. Dan Cooper Bio

FoGP is fortunate to have Dr. Dan Cooper as its Scientific Director. He has led numerous Griffith Park surveys and studies since 2007 and leads the FoGP-sponsored LA Raptor Study. Dr. Cooper is a lifelong resident of Southern California, and is regarded as an expert on the birds and natural history in the vicinity. He currently serves as Principal Conservation Biologist and Deputy Executive Officer for the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Through research and independent consulting, he has spent more than 20 years conducting surveys and drafting reports in the region, and co-authored a landmark conservation analysis for the Santa Monica Mountains Coastal Zone for L.A. Co. Department of Regional Planning in 2014. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Dr. Cooper was the Conservation Director for Audubon California in the early 2000s, where he helped develop the Audubon Center at Debs Park, and wrote Important Bird Areas of California. Dr. Cooper has published several dozen peer-reviewed papers on biodiversity patterns and local plant and wildlife species, and was named a Research Associate in the Department of Ornithology at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum in 2020.

He holds a PhD from UCLA, as well as degrees from UC Riverside and Harvard University.
