SUMMARY:Saturday\, July 13 – Weeding & Mulching Across from Trails Café
DESCRIPTION:Just think… you can do something good for the Park\, and then treat yourself to coffee and a pastry across the street.\nIt’s a win-win! \nWe’ll be weeding and dropping mulch in the garden we planted a few years back. The weeds are a product of the past winter rains\, and while we’ve tried to keep them to a minimum\, it’s been a challenge! The mulch will help to keep the weed population down\, and help keep moisture in these plants… especially during the hot summer we’re currently experiencing. \nLook for the signs… we’ll be across the street from Trails Café. If you can find street parking\, great. If not\, drive up the road to #9 Lot and walk down. \nDress for the heat… in other words come comfortably dressed. We provide the tools but if you have a fav pair of gloves\, please bring ’em. Also\, wear a hat and sunscreen\, even though this area is fairly shady in the morning. Bring a water bottle and we will provide water! \nBTW… we’re required by RAP to have volunteer agreement forms on hand for everyone working in the Park. If you haven’t filled one out\, please do it today and send to FoGP Volunteer Coordinator Ross Arnold. \nHope to see you out in the Park!

SUMMARY:It's back to the Bird Sanctuary we go...
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Griffith Park is heading back to the Bird Sanctuary AGAIN as we continue to clear debris from streambeds and tackle more invasives. A quick explanation of why we try to get ahead of the invasives: they tend to crowd out natives. We’ve seen first-hand what happens when invasives are removed – natives thrive! \nThere’s a example of this\, btw… pockets of caterpillar phacelia are evident along slopes – an indicator that our efforts have been helpful returning natives to this area that was devastated by the 2007 fire. We hope everyone who showed up on Earth Day will continue to support our efforts. Don’t forget to bring a friend! \nPlease dress comfortably… old clothes\, comfy shoes\, plus a hat and sunscreen. If you have gloves\, bring them\, although we do have gloves on hand.\nWe’ll provide tools and water (if you bring a bottle\, you can always refill). \nGet ready\, get set\, join the fun and continue to celebrate Griffith Park!

SUMMARY:FoGP Volunteers are Heading Back to Griffith Park's Fern Canyon
DESCRIPTION:It´s been awhile since we hiked into this area to conduct some work and while it´s a good thing that some Park natives planted years ago are thriving\, the area could definitely use a few hands and followup. \nBTW\, this sweet charming area is adjacent to one of the many canyon-fed stream beds in the Park. If you´ve never been here\, it´s your opportunity to discover one of the many areas destroyed in the 2007 fire\, yet this has come back nicely. For more information on these restoration efforts\, we created a brochure highlighting the Marshall High students who worked on the project. \nAs usual\, we´ll provide tools and gloves\, but if you have a favorite pair you love\, please feel free to bring them. We urge you to always wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting REALLY DIRTY! \nIf you’ve volunteered with us in the past\, you know Rec and Parks requires volunteer agreements\, so if you haven’t filled one out\, please do so and send along to Ross. We´ll also have a few available at the event just in case.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Hike — Take 2
DESCRIPTION:If you attended one of our mushroom hikes\, you’re already well aware of how much fun this can be because this is the time to check out the extraordinary variety of mushrooms\, courtesy of rainstorms barreling through the SoCAL region. \nAgain we’ll be hiking with Bat Vardeh from the LA Mycological Society (LAMS) and founder of Foraging and Mushroom Hunting Women of SoCal. She’s a great leader\, taking the time to explain the importance of mushrooms in the environment\, and the symbiotic relationship they share with other plants and trees. \nPlease remember\, this hike is limited to 25\, so don’t forget to sign up in order to secure a spot  One rsvp per person!\nIf you plan on bringing a guest\, please rsvp their name as well. \nYou will receive instructions on where the hike will take place and available parking when you rsvp! \n

SUMMARY:Save the Date — 8th Annual L.A. Raptor Training / Sepulveda Basin
DESCRIPTION:Our L.A. Raptor Study team is planning in-person volunteer workshops — and we´d love to see new and returning faces to our cadre of community scientists. This is the second in-person training and will take place at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve (look for signage) \nWe hope you´ll be a part of our eighth annual L.A. Raptor Study which has been tracking and monitoring the ecological dynamics of our nesting raptors. Volunteers are an essential part of this study; they are the eyes on the ground collecting data for our biologists to analyze. This urban survey has been making important strides in how we understand urban raptors. \nIf you´re a new volunteer that´s interested in joining this important study\, please fill out the required volunteer application. \nSITE information will be sent prior to the training.

SUMMARY:Planting Event Across from Greek Theatre
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading back to the area across the street from the Greek to mulch\, weed and plant more natives to take advantage of winter storms dropping more wet stuff. \nWhile we’ve made some headway in this area\, there’s always more to be done! We’ll be placing more natives so when spring arrives\, you’ll see more blooms along these hillsides\, a testament to volunteer efforts. \nPark in the Greek parking lot and cross the street (look for our signage). As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, bring a hat (and if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, bring ’em\, and don’t forget the sunscreen. Of course we’ll supply all of the tools needed. We also supply water and work gloves\, but suggest if you have a water bottle\, please bring it. \nIf you’ve volunteered in the past\, you don’t need to fill in a Volunteer Agreement —  if you’re a first timer\, it’s important you fill this out and either send to Ross ross@friendsofgriffithpark.org\, or bring with you. \nAnd if you’re a member of an organization looking for community service\, we may be the “ticket’… Leave the info on FoGP’s VOLUNTEER NOW and someone will contact you. Thanks.

SUMMARY:We're Heading Back to the Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:It’s back to the Bird Sanctuary for additional work between the rains… We´ll be cleaning the stream beds of leaves\, branches\, and debris because the heavy rains tend to create floods in this area. We’ll also be pulling weeds which is always great fun. \nAs far as parking near this site; we strongly suggest that you park at the Greek Theater and walk up. It’s roughly a 10-minute walk unless you — like me — walk slow. \nWe highly recommend that you wear long pants\, bring a hat (and if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, bring ’em\, and don’t forget the sunscreen. We’ll supply all of the tools needed. We do supply water and work gloves\, if you have a water bottle\, please bring it. \nIf you’ve volunteered in the past\, you don’t need to fill in a Volunteer Agreement\, but if you’re a first timer\, it’s important you fill this out and either send to Ross at rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring with you. \nAnd if you’re a member of an organization looking for community service\, we may be the “ticket’… Leave the info on the VOLUNTEER NOW button at the top of the Home Page\, and someone will contact you. Thanks.
