SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day is Coming – and You’re Invited!
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day by removing Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) and Indian Tobacco (Lobelia inflata) from the trail near the Tregnan Golf Academy. Park in the Train/Pony Rides Parking Lot and then walk across the street to the picnic table where FoGP will have a Welcome Table set-up. Before anyone may volunteer in Griffith Park\, they must first complete a Volunteer Agreement which will also be available at the table\, if you have not already completed this form. You will be able to sign-in and receive safety instruction and directions to the site. After brief remarks about the project\, we’ll head up the Cadman Trail next to the Golf Academy and divide into small groups to tackle the invasive plants. Invasive plants will be cut down\, with seed pods carefully cut off and bagged. These cut plants will be hauled off by Maintenance Division of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The seed pods will be placed into trash cans. We’re focusing our efforts on several acres! \nWe strongly recommend that everyone wear closed-toed shoes or boots\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen.  We always supply work gloves and water\, but if you have your own gloves and water container\, please bring them. We will have a limited amount of pruning tools so if you have gardening pruning tools such as hand pruners\, loppers\, tree limb saws\, bow saws\, and or pole pruners\, we ask that you please bring them. \nIf we get sufficient numbers of folks volunteering on this day\, we should be able to remove all invasives in the lower area\, and we may be able to move higher up the trail to other areas of invasive plants. \nHope to see you out in the Park for this event! \nCheck out the NEEF website for more information about this\, and other events… https://www.neefusa.org/news/registration-national-public-lands-day-2024-volunteer-events-now-open

SUMMARY:Results From the 2024 LA Raptor Study
DESCRIPTION:The 8th L.A. Raptor Study from Daniel S. Cooper\, Nurit Katz & team is currently being compiled in anticipation of the upcoming ZOOM call sharing study results. \nOver eight years of this study\, hundreds of raptor territories have been documented and the study has greatly informed our understanding of how nesting raptors utilize the urban landscape. We’re proud to announce this 2024 dataset is again possible thanks to trained/dedicated community scientists from across the social spectrum who record the data from nests in Griffith Park and surrounding natural areas\, from trees along urban roadways\, and finally\, in residential yards. \n\nSome questions which will be addressed – which species had the most nests and in what tree species?\nWhich species returns to the same nests year after year?\nHow many successful nests were observed in 2024?\n\nDon’t forget to tune in to find the answers to these and other questions! \nPlease register for the ZOOM webinar at https://ucla.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aB2ZXOrRT-eE5XYqD82jPQ

SUMMARY:Dr. Greg Pauly: Rodenticides & Southern California Snakes
DESCRIPTION:FoGP continues its Summer Lecture Series featuring Dr. Greg Pauly discussing “Beyond Raptors and Carnivores: Anticoagulant Rodenticide Exposure in Southern California Snakes.” \nRodenticides are widely used to control pest populations. The most common rodenticides are anticoagulant compounds that cause death from excessive internal bleeding\, typically 4–14 days after baits are ingested. Prior research has shown that exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are a major conservation concern for raptors and mammals that prey upon or scavenge poisoned rodents. \nOnly a handful of studies globally have examined the effects on snakes exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides. \nThrough research funded in part by Friends of Griffith Park\, Dr. Pauly and his team are testing for this exposure to ARs in multiple snake species across Southern California – important work that adds more names to species secondarily poisoned by ARs and highlights the need for further studies examining impacts and conservation threats of rodenticide exposure in reptiles. \nDr. Greg Pauly Bio\nDr. Pauly is Director of the Urban Nature Research Center and Curator of Herpetology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He studies the natural history\, evolution\, and conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Since joining the Museum in 2012\, he has focused his studies on the impacts of urbanization on wildlife. Dr. Pauly is an advocate for community science and believes partnerships between professional scientists and community members can revolutionize scientific research. \nHe holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California\, Davis.

SUMMARY:We’re Going Back to Anza Native Garden!
DESCRIPTION:Yes… we know it’s hot\, but Griffith Park is calling and we’ve got work to do! \nOur Anza Native Garden needs some love\, so we’re heading out to weed and drop mulch in the garden near Crystal Springs Picnic Area that we planted a few years back. \nLook for FoGP signage: we’ll be meeting in the Crystal Springs Parking Lot adjacent to the golf course. \nPlease dress for the heat… in other words\, come comfortably dressed. We’ll provide gloves and tools but if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, please bring ’em. We also urge you to wear a hat and sunscreen. Bring a water bottle and we’ll provide water! \nBTW… we’re required by RAP to have volunteer agreement forms on hand for everyone working in the Park. If you haven’t filled one out\, please do so today and send to FoGP Volunteer Coordinator rossarnold1213@gmail.com. \nHope to see you out in the Park – it’ll be lots of fun!

There have been two horse shows\, and another one is coming up. Handed out fliers for an upcoming show.\nMarion Dodge: Announced raptor survey (Los Angeles Raptor Study). Wanted to give a special thank you to Board member Chung and his parents for bringing attention to an owlet that had fallen from a nest too close to the road. Gerry Hans rescued the owlet and both owlets have fledged.\nSteve: Thank you for having minutes available for review so quickly.\nChair Thornton: Minutes are always posted online if anyone wants to review. \nINFORMATIONAL REPORTS & PRESENTATIONS\nPark Rangers were available to answer questions.\nChair Thornton: Welcomed Rangers Trejo and Woods and asked that they introduce themselves.\nRanger Trejo: Rangers are moved around about once a year with about 29 total Rangers\, responsible for 400 municipal parks including Griffith and Hansen Dam plus many small parks and recreation centers.\nChair Thornton: Are any Rangers 24 hours?\nRanger Trejo: Units work theater and events but generally don’t work at night due to lack of firearms. The rangers can call the LAPD\, but LAPD is not familiar with the Park and doesn’t have keys for all gate entries.\nCarlson: Have you seen an increase in unlicensed vending?\nRanger Trejo: When rangers ask for permit vendors sometimes produce a photocopy or deny the request. Rangers have spoken with street services. Technically\, some vendors are unpermitted\, or the photo is not accurate\, but vending is non-criminal so unpermitted vendors cannot be arrested. The work-around was to implement citations and provide copies of the vending regulations. But unpermitted vendors will come back after just two days of not enforcing citations.\nPhillips: If they had permits\, could an unlimited amount of people be there?\nRanger Trejo: No\, they have to be 25 feet away from each other.\nPhillips: If one has a permit\, can they vend anywhere?\nRanger Trejo: Yes\nPhillips: Does it then come down to who shows up first?\nRanger Trejo: No\, they can argue about who arrived first. Rangers recommend vendors take log or make note of time of arrival. And there are different permits\, merchandise versus food.\nCrow: How would they document when they arrived?\nRanger Trejo: Written log and suggested to have a photo with timestamp.\nCrow: Are you citing them now?\nRanger Trejo: It is difficult to cite them because usually they don’t want to provide ID and they don’t have to. Helpful to call the permit owner. Street services has been difficult to get in touch with.\nCrow: Sounds like you have already done a degree of legwork\, is this a priority going forward? How do you think it will play out?\nRanger Trejo: Because it’s not criminal\, it’s difficult\, but with street services citing them it starts becoming expensive.\nChung: Is there precedent? Has it successfully deterred vendors in the past?\nRanger Trejo: It has\, but there are challenges around perception because people think rangers are harassing vendors. The vendors do not have to cooperate.\nRanger Woods: It’s a priority but there are lots of issues and few rangers.\nRanger Trejo: Some vendors are following the rules\, and it doesn’t seem fair.\nChair Thornton: I noticed a significant drop in flower vendors outside Martinez arena. Maybe down to 10%. Are you noticing fewer vendors anywhere in the Park?\nRanger Trejo: We don’t address the ones outside the park and haven’t noticed a change.\nNo coin\nCarlson: How do you address park visitors’ bad behaviors?\nRanger Trejo: Rangers are usually not able to get there fast enough. Just yesterday rangers arrested two people engaging in nefarious behaviors.\nPhillips: Not to put words in your mouth\, it is difficult to deploy resources given all the issues and priorities.\nRanger Trejo: Yes.\nChair Thornton: If you have an hour\, are there hotspots you visit regularly\, and will you look into them?\nRanger Trejo: It varies\, but there are hotspots around the Observatory\, visitor center\, soccer fields\, car break-ins\, Shane’s Inspiration\, transitional housing\, the Griffith Park Rec Center with narcotics\, central service yard for catalytic converters theft and now stealing fuel. There has been an uptick in pickpockets at the Observatory and Rangers are making their presence known. Chung: Is the Old LA Zoo still a hotspot?\nRanger Trejo: Yes\, but often they are gone very quickly.\nCarlson: What can people do if they see an issue?\nRanger Trejo: Call it in with descriptors so people can be found very quickly. But taking pictures may be problematic. Even if it seems like things are not being done\, call it in so they can keep a paper trail and focus on new hotspots\, continue to call and take safe pictures if you can. These issues can escalate quickly\, two Rangers were shot over open containers.\nCarlson: Can you tell us about the Junior Ranger Program?\nRanger Woods: It’s twice a month on Saturdays\, youth between 8 and 17 – we teach them all about being a ranger\, do hikes\, identify flora and fauna\, hiking\, firefighting\, rope rescue\, it’s a very hands-on program and a fun way to know what a Park Ranger does.\nChair Thornton: How do people find out?\nRanger Woods: Posted on City website\, maybe on Friends of Griffith Park website\, Instagram\, LA Parks main website.\nSuperintendent: Has anyone gone through the program and become a ranger?\nRanger Woods: Not to my knowledge.\nSuperintendent: The chief ranger thought some people had gone through the program and became rangers.\nRanger Woods: We have discussed doing a long-term program.\nChair Thornton: Sounds like a great program to teach them to be rangers\, but also to be good citizens.\nCarlson: Is it well attended?\nRanger Woods: Seems so\, has pretty good turnout. We cap it at 40 and we usually get between 30-40 participants.\nChair Thornton: Sounds like a fantastic program. Do you have repeat kids?\nRanger Woods: Yes.\nCrow: Thank you for being here. From what I can gather\, you are a key component to keeping the park safe. Is personnel the biggest issue?\nRanger Trejo: Personnel is an issue\, but arms are also an issue. We have to change our tactics dramatically from what we are taught at the Academy. We have a history of incidences\, and the trend shows that arms and knives appear with small incidents. We don’t have the tools to cover the Park.\nCrow: Are your feelings representative of all Park Rangers?\nRanger Trejo: We need LAPD to book them\, and LAPD thinks we are crazy doing this job without a firearm. We re-certify every year with firearms.\nChair Thornton: Do you carry tasers?\nRanger Trejo: We have used it (tasers) three times and it’s failed every time.\nCarlson: Does LAPD come quickly?\nRanger Trejo: No. They don’t even have the keys to gates.\nCrow: We have heard turnover is an issue – why do they leave?\nRanger Trejo: Rangers would have stayed if they had a firearm. We are in an academy class with many other types of officers\, they would come over if we had guns.\nCrow: Is there anything else that can be done to draw in new rangers?\nRanger Trejo: New tasers may help\, but that’s unclear.\nChair Thornton: Anything else we haven’t asked?\nRanger Trejo: We also rescued an owl on a golf course. \nPUBLIC COMMENT\nSarajane\, HHH: Are there open positions for Rangers? How many does the City budget for?\nRanger Trejo: We should be staffed over 50\, there are open positions\, but the time to hire is long process. LAPD is prioritized to graduate.\nSarajane\, HHH: Lake Hollywood vending\, what are some of the other issues the vendors cause?\nRanger Trejo: Vendors seem to be picking up after themselves. For the most part it’s just the presence of vendors.\nSarajane\, HHH: We have noticed fruit cups and forks. I don’t know where they are going to the bathroom and clean hands to serve food.\nRanger Trejo: Been trying to reach out to other entities and they can call the health department about the bathroom issue.\nSarajane\, HHH: When are people leaving trash?\nRanger Trejo: It’s more customers leaving trash.\nSuperintendent: Appreciate them for coming out and everything you do. \nBROWN ACT REVIEW\nJoe Salacies reviewed the Brown Act rules. GPAB has to follow the rules because the City Council created the Parks commissioners\, so we have to follow the transparency rules in meetings with the public. Agenda must be posted 72 hours before\, posted on door of meeting location.\nChair Thornton: What happens if you don’t post it? Can you not have the meeting?\nJoe Salacies: Technically you’re in violation\, you would have to cancel meeting.\nCrow: How long has it been in place?\nJoe Salacies: Since the 1940s.\nCrow: What would happen\, would you sanction the board?\nJoe Salacies: There could be a city council action\, lawsuit\, or other consequences. Motion items need more description\, if informational you don’t need to have public comment.\nCrow: Does the potential for a motion have to be on the agenda?\nJoe Salacies: Yes\, it cannot be done on the fly. Public has to be involved. Standing committees meet regularly\, have to follow the Brown Act. Ad hoc committees do not have to meet in public. They are temporary. They do not have to follow the Brown Act. But you cannot have the Board members attend if they are not on the committee. Standing committees cannot have members of the public. And Board members should not meet in any group larger than a quorum to discuss board business. This applies to social media and phones. Chair Thornton: Can you talk a bit about email? Can we talk via email?\nJoe Salacies: It’s yes and no. You can discuss meeting attendance\, for example.\nPhillips: I’ve heard to avoid emails with “should”.\nChair Thornton: there was an issue around public records request. Do they apply to us? \nJoe Salacies: The City attorney will handle. They can request your personal email and text.\nChair Thornton: Is it a request we can say no to?\nPhillips: Sounds like a question for the City attorney.\nJoe Salacies: Yes\, this sounds like a legal question\, not a Brown Act thing. \nLOS ANGELES EQUESTRIAN CENTER\nJoe Salacies provided an update on the Los Angeles Equestrian Center This is the third month of moving ASM Global into equestrian center. Had a Blenheim Horse Show.  \nChair Thornton: For those that don’t know the Blenheim Show is a big deal.\nJoe Salacies: Every dollar that comes in goes back to the LAEC. There are lots of improvements needed. One of the barns needs all new electrical. Adding timers and sensors to lighting. Road replacement at Equidome. Bring back the Rancho District and all surrounding districts. Changed all the footings in arenas. Have contract with footing company. Want to bring in revenue.\nPhillips: Sounds like at some point it should be a self-sustaining enterprise?\nJoe Salacies: It should be. We have to build up the calendar. We opened up the Greek and it worked to fill the calendar.\nChair Thornton: Just driving by you feel like there is progress\, like they painted the entrance\, added rat boxes. It’s simple things. People don’t realize how important electrical is and how dangerous it is in a barn.\nChair Thornton: Are you going to have a board like the Greek (Theatre) does?\nJoe Salacies: Yes\, we are taking our time on it. Or waiting for the right time. We have started coffee hours. \nPUBLIC COMMENT\nPublic: Talk about the food concession change. Talk about the options now available.\nChair Thornton: The food is much better at shows.\nJoe Salacies: We are relying on outside catering for now\, but ASM will bring in food.\nChair Thornton: Are you going to continue to have filming?\nJoe Salacies: It’s a balance.\nLiz: The commissioners approved $2 million for electrical. One barn is $600k and it’s so bad that you would have to turn off the power during rain.\nChair Thornton: How long until it’s done?\nSuperintendent: It will be years before it’s done. It’s just like the Greek. It was in such bad shape before we took over. We have to figure out how to prioritize.\nPublic: Has there been a decision about where the LA28 Olympics will be?\nJoe Salacies: Unsure\, but I’ve heard its Sepulveda Basin.\nChair Thornton: We could have prelims.\nCarlson: IOC gets profit first.\nSuperintendent thanked Joe for handling this project. \nSUPERINTENDENT UPDATES\n– Active transportation project is scheduled to start on July 9th. Message boards are around notifying of road work. They are advertising the project will take 2 months\, but it shouldn’t be that long. Contractor is tackling one piece at a time. Detour for cyclists will be noticed.\n– Pote Field bleacher project complete\, advise you to go take a look. They were very bad.\n– Budget cuts\, as expected scales back funding for all departments\, but approved salary increase. Got 79 maintenance positions back. Cuts taking in part time budget. Maintenance and recreation impacted most. Not just rec and parks. Everyone will get a pay increase for next five years. Hard to retain employees without the pay increase. We used to pay competitive wages. It’s one of the top three worst times I’ve seen budget-wise. We will continue.\n– Pony rides: nothing new to report\, gathering information from polls and surveys. Board of Commissioners will make recommendations on how to move forward.\nChair Thornton: Late spring or summer still?\nSuperintendent: Yes. \nCOMMITTEE & AD HOC REPORTS \nChair Thornton: The Executive Committee met and talked about the last meeting and the next meeting. \nBOARD BUSINESS \nChung: Fern Dell trail area – the bathrooms are still under construction\, correct? Porta potties don’t appear to be there.\nSuperintendent: They have possibly been moved. I will check.\nChair Thornton: (Showed large spikes that DWP puts to mark pipes) They don’t seem like a good idea to have in the Park. Horses or people can step on them.\nSuperintendent: Who did we talk to before when this was an issue? Maybe take them to the council office?\nChair Thornton: Should we take this to Memet? Can they pull them out? Volunteered to talk to Memet. \nADJOURNMENT\nMotion: Phillips first and Chung second\, and Phillips second.\nUnanimous at 8:30pm. Next meeting Thursday\, June 27th\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, July 13 – Weeding & Mulching Across from Trails Café
DESCRIPTION:Just think… you can do something good for the Park\, and then treat yourself to coffee and a pastry across the street.\nIt’s a win-win! \nWe’ll be weeding and dropping mulch in the garden we planted a few years back. The weeds are a product of the past winter rains\, and while we’ve tried to keep them to a minimum\, it’s been a challenge! The mulch will help to keep the weed population down\, and help keep moisture in these plants… especially during the hot summer we’re currently experiencing. \nLook for the signs… we’ll be across the street from Trails Café. If you can find street parking\, great. If not\, drive up the road to #9 Lot and walk down. \nDress for the heat… in other words come comfortably dressed. We provide the tools but if you have a fav pair of gloves\, please bring ’em. Also\, wear a hat and sunscreen\, even though this area is fairly shady in the morning. Bring a water bottle and we will provide water! \nBTW… we’re required by RAP to have volunteer agreement forms on hand for everyone working in the Park. If you haven’t filled one out\, please do it today and send to FoGP Volunteer Coordinator Ross Arnold. \nHope to see you out in the Park!

SUMMARY:It's back to the Bird Sanctuary we go...
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Griffith Park is heading back to the Bird Sanctuary AGAIN as we continue to clear debris from streambeds and tackle more invasives. A quick explanation of why we try to get ahead of the invasives: they tend to crowd out natives. We’ve seen first-hand what happens when invasives are removed – natives thrive! \nThere’s a example of this\, btw… pockets of caterpillar phacelia are evident along slopes – an indicator that our efforts have been helpful returning natives to this area that was devastated by the 2007 fire. We hope everyone who showed up on Earth Day will continue to support our efforts. Don’t forget to bring a friend! \nPlease dress comfortably… old clothes\, comfy shoes\, plus a hat and sunscreen. If you have gloves\, bring them\, although we do have gloves on hand.\nWe’ll provide tools and water (if you bring a bottle\, you can always refill). \nGet ready\, get set\, join the fun and continue to celebrate Griffith Park!

SUMMARY:FoGP Volunteers are Heading Back to Griffith Park's Fern Canyon
DESCRIPTION:It´s been awhile since we hiked into this area to conduct some work and while it´s a good thing that some Park natives planted years ago are thriving\, the area could definitely use a few hands and followup. \nBTW\, this sweet charming area is adjacent to one of the many canyon-fed stream beds in the Park. If you´ve never been here\, it´s your opportunity to discover one of the many areas destroyed in the 2007 fire\, yet this has come back nicely. For more information on these restoration efforts\, we created a brochure highlighting the Marshall High students who worked on the project. \nAs usual\, we´ll provide tools and gloves\, but if you have a favorite pair you love\, please feel free to bring them. We urge you to always wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting REALLY DIRTY! \nIf you’ve volunteered with us in the past\, you know Rec and Parks requires volunteer agreements\, so if you haven’t filled one out\, please do so and send along to Ross. We´ll also have a few available at the event just in case.

SUMMARY:Save the Date — 8th Annual L.A. Raptor Training / Sepulveda Basin
DESCRIPTION:Our L.A. Raptor Study team is planning in-person volunteer workshops — and we´d love to see new and returning faces to our cadre of community scientists. This is the second in-person training and will take place at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve (look for signage) \nWe hope you´ll be a part of our eighth annual L.A. Raptor Study which has been tracking and monitoring the ecological dynamics of our nesting raptors. Volunteers are an essential part of this study; they are the eyes on the ground collecting data for our biologists to analyze. This urban survey has been making important strides in how we understand urban raptors. \nIf you´re a new volunteer that´s interested in joining this important study\, please fill out the required volunteer application. \nSITE information will be sent prior to the training.

DESCRIPTION:Our L.A. Raptor Study team is planning for volunteer workshops — and we´d love to see new and returning faces to our cadre of community scientists. This in-person training has been moved to Feb. 10 since there´s a strong chance of buckets ‘o rain on Feb. 4. As we get more info\, we’ll announce the exact location. \nWe hope you´ll be a part of our eighth annual L.A.

SUMMARY:Planting Event Across from Greek Theatre
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading back to the area across the street from the Greek to mulch\, weed and plant more natives to take advantage of winter storms dropping more wet stuff. \nWhile we’ve made some headway in this area\, there’s always more to be done! We’ll be placing more natives so when spring arrives\, you’ll see more blooms along these hillsides\, a testament to volunteer efforts. \nPark in the Greek parking lot and cross the street (look for our signage). As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, bring a hat (and if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, bring ’em\, and don’t forget the sunscreen. Of course we’ll supply all of the tools needed. We also supply water and work gloves\, but suggest if you have a water bottle\, please bring it. \nIf you’ve volunteered in the past\, you don’t need to fill in a Volunteer Agreement —  if you’re a first timer\, it’s important you fill this out and either send to Ross ross@friendsofgriffithpark.org\, or bring with you. \nAnd if you’re a member of an organization looking for community service\, we may be the “ticket’… Leave the info on FoGP’s VOLUNTEER NOW and someone will contact you. Thanks.

SUMMARY:We're Heading Back to the Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:It’s back to the Bird Sanctuary for additional work between the rains… We´ll be cleaning the stream beds of leaves\, branches\, and debris because the heavy rains tend to create floods in this area. We’ll also be pulling weeds which is always great fun. \nAs far as parking near this site; we strongly suggest that you park at the Greek Theater and walk up. It’s roughly a 10-minute walk unless you — like me — walk slow. \nWe highly recommend that you wear long pants\, bring a hat (and if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, bring ’em\, and don’t forget the sunscreen. We’ll supply all of the tools needed. We do supply water and work gloves\, if you have a water bottle\, please bring it. \nIf you’ve volunteered in the past\, you don’t need to fill in a Volunteer Agreement\, but if you’re a first timer\, it’s important you fill this out and either send to Ross at rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring with you. \nAnd if you’re a member of an organization looking for community service\, we may be the “ticket’… Leave the info on the VOLUNTEER NOW button at the top of the Home Page\, and someone will contact you. Thanks.
