SUMMARY:FoGP will be back at the Anza Garden
DESCRIPTION:Dear Park Volunteers… we hope you’re enjoying your summer –  the hot days and the cool\, balmy evenings…\n\nWe’re going back to the Anza Garden which is located at the northeast corner of Crystal Springs Picnic Area. So head into the Crystal Springs area\, turn left into the parking lot\, and head toward the freeway.\n\nWe’ll be pulling weeds\, invasive grasses and other invasive plants\, and then spreading mulch. This mulch helps to slow the return of weeds and it adds nutrients to the soil and reduces evaporation during the warmer months of summer. There’s also a large tree branch that needs to be removed.\n\nWe strongly recommend that you wear closed-toed shoes\, long (lightweight) pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen.  We’ll supply hand tools\, trash bags for weeds\, work gloves\, water\, and cups.  If you have your own work gloves and a water container\, we suggest you bring them.\n\nAnd\, If you’ve not already completed and submitted one of our Volunteer Agreement forms\, you’ll need to do so before you’re allowed to work in the park per LA Rec and Parks. Please complete the form\, scan it\, and email it back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring the completed form to your first project. If you’ve completed this form already\, you will only need to sign in when you arrive at the worksite.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the event!\n\nRoss Arnold\, FoGP Volunteer Coordinator

SUMMARY:July’s Fern Dell Volunteer Event
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 12th\, we’ll be working across the street from Trails Café in the native garden. During these summer months\, FoGP volunteers provide maintenance to native planted areas to ensure they get the necessary tools to survive – including removal of weeds and distribution of mulch which better holds the moisture. \nHowever\, keep in mind – on the weekends\, parking in the Park is always a challenge; therefore if there’s no street parking\, please check for a space at Parking Lot #9\, located to the north of Trails Café. \n\n\nFoGP supplies hand tools\, work gloves\, and water\, but if you have your own work gloves and or water container\, we urge you to bring these items with you. Please wear closed-toed shoes or boots\, long pants\, bring a hat\, and make sure you slather on the sunscreen. Also\, LA RAP requires FoGP to have a signed Volunteer Agreement form for everyone working in the Park. Download and either return in person or email to Ross Arnold rossarnold1213@gmail.com.\n\nAnd if you can’t make this event\, but would like to stay in touch with the organization\, like us on Facebook\, and/or bookmark our website.

SUMMARY:Back to Fern Canyon for More Maintenance...
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Griffith Park will be holding its next conservation event Saturday\, June 7th.\n\nWe’re meeting at the Merry-go-round Parking Lot entrance and walking up to the catch basins at the bottom of Fern Canyon. We’ll be removing invasive plants that tend to overwhelm disturbed areas (and these catch basins are definitely disturbed).\n\nAs usual\, we strongly recommend wearing close-toed shoes or hiking boots\, long pants\, sunscreen\, and a hat.  We supply the hand tools\, plastic bags\, work gloves\, and water\, but if you have your own pair of gloves\, we encourage you to bring them. Same with water containers – bring them if you have them.\n\nIf you have not completed one of our Volunteer Agreement forms\, you will need to complete one before you volunteer in the Park. Please complete the form\, scan it\, and email back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com. If you’ve already completed / submitted a form in the past\, just sign-in when you arrive at the meeting spot.\n\nAlso\, If you’re interested in organizing a project in the Park for your organization\, club\, company\, or group\, please reach out at Volunteer page on our website – someone will contact you. If you’re available during the week and would like to pitch in\, we have a small group going out on Wednesdays to remove invasive plants in the Park. This group works from 8:00 to 10:00 AM.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday\, June 7th!\n\n\n(one of our previous invasive removals carted out a large amount of the castor bean)\n

SUMMARY:We're Heading Back to Fern Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Hooray for the rains… they help replenish our aquifers and in the spring\, waters flow more easily down the streambeds. \nThey also remind us of the old saying… April showers bring many more May flowers\, so we have something to look forward to come spring! \nThat said\, we’ll be meeting at the entrance of the first Merry-go-round Parking Lot. We’ll walk up into Fern Canyon to remove weeds and invasive plants\, and do some maintenance/repair along the trail. \nAs per RAP\, everyone needs to complete one of our Volunteer Agreement Forms or have one on file. \nWe highly suggest that folks wear long pants\, closed-toed shoes\, and bring a hat. If you have some fab gloves\, please bring\, but we do provide.\nWe also urge you to wear sunscreen\, and if you have a water bottle\, bring it.

SUMMARY:Save the Date – EARTH DAY 2025
DESCRIPTION:FoGP will be partnering with LA Recreation and Parks (RAP)\nand CD 4’s Nithya Raman for a native planting at the GP Visitor Center. \nEarth Day is very special… this embrace of the environment  began on April 22\, 1970 when approximately 20 million Americans came out to attend volunteer events across the country. \nAnd while the movement continues\, it’s become even more important to acknowledge the need for protecting Mother Earth\, especially during the times when climate denial is so prevalent in the US. \nfor more information on the importance of Earth Day\, go to…\nhttps://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/april-22/

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Hike With Jorge Ochoa
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe’re heading out on another excursion with Jorge Ochoa and if you’ve ever taken any hikes with him\, you know he really delves into the inner workings of this Park. \nAs one of FoGP’s Advisory Board members\, Jorge will spend a few hours exploring and discussing the vast number of native plants that can be found in Griffith Park. And as we wander along these trails\, questions (and answers) will arise… But the real question is… what discoveries will capture our imagination? \nAs an associate professor of horticulture at Long Beach City College\, Jorge’s enthusiasm for all things plants will captivate you… so you’re in for a treat when you join us! \nMEETUP INFORMATION WILL BE SENT PRIOR TO DATE!

SUMMARY:Back to Fern Dell
DESCRIPTION:Spring is the time for maintenance – so we’re heading back to the Fern Dell area\, continuing to clean fallen branches and other storm debris. Once we get more rain (hopefully soon)\, we’ll conduct another volunteer effort – placing plants and mulch in the same area. Look for our signage – we’ll be across the street from Trails Café. \nOf course we provide tools and gloves\, but if you have a favorite well-worn pair\, please feel free to bring them. We urge you to always wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting REALLY DIRTY and don a hat and sunscreen as this IS California. \nRoll up your sleeves for a few hours of fun with friends. What could be better afterward than grabbing a coffee and a tasty snake at Trails? It’s the best way to start your weekend. \nSat.\, March 8 / 8:30-11AM (across from Trails Cafe)\nBTW… we’re required by RAP to have volunteer agreement forms on hand for everyone working in the Park. If you haven’t filled one out\, please do it today and send to FoGP Volunteer Coordinator Ross Arnold… ross@friendsofgriffithpark.org. \nHope to see you out in the Park!

SUMMARY:FoGP's First Mushroom Hike of 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nFoGP is excited to announce our first Mushroom Hike of the new year! Because of recent rains\, mushrooms are beginning to pop up all over Griffith Park! \nAnd once again FoGP is enlisting the talents of mushroom expert Bat Vardeh\, Founder of Foraging and Mushroom Hunting Women of SoCal\, to lead us into the wonderful world of fungi. \nWe’ll be heading out early so you must show up by 8AM SHARP on Sun.\, Feb. 23! Otherwise\, you’ll be left behind. \nSince there are limited spaces available\, be sure to sign up now. You’ll be given directions on where to meet after signing up. If you’re unable to make this hike\, there will be another mushroom walk in Mid-March so make sure to check back on our website calendar events. \n(BTW… we NEVER forage edible mushrooms; this is a purely-educational\, casual walk.) \n

SUMMARY:FoGP is heading back in Fern Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Fern Canyon is one of our special volunteer projects because this was one of the areas completely decimated by the 2007 fire that swept through Griffith Park. Years later\, Marshall High students came to Fern Canyon and placed natives to help the area regrow. FoGP continues to help the process by occasionally going in and eliminating invasive plants to help natives gain ground. BTW\, this area is adjacent to one of many canyon-fed stream beds throughout the Park. If you’ve never hiked or visited this spot\, now’s your opportunity to discover this lush canyon. \nAs usual\, we´ll provide tools and gloves\, but if you have a favorite pair you love\, please feel free to bring them. SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day is Coming – and You’re Invited!
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day by removing Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) and Indian Tobacco (Lobelia inflata) from the trail near the Tregnan Golf Academy. Park in the Train/Pony Rides Parking Lot and then walk across the street to the picnic table where FoGP will have a Welcome Table set-up. Before anyone may volunteer in Griffith Park\, they must first complete a Volunteer Agreement which will also be available at the table\, if you have not already completed this form. You will be able to sign-in and receive safety instruction and directions to the site. After brief remarks about the project\, we’ll head up the Cadman Trail next to the Golf Academy and divide into small groups to tackle the invasive plants. Invasive plants will be cut down\, with seed pods carefully cut off and bagged. These cut plants will be hauled off by Maintenance Division of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The seed pods will be placed into trash cans. We’re focusing our efforts on several acres! \nWe strongly recommend that everyone wear closed-toed shoes or boots\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen.  We always supply work gloves and water\, but if you have your own gloves and water container\, please bring them. We will have a limited amount of pruning tools so if you have gardening pruning tools such as hand pruners\, loppers\, tree limb saws\, bow saws\, and or pole pruners\, we ask that you please bring them. \nIf we get sufficient numbers of folks volunteering on this day\, we should be able to remove all invasives in the lower area\, and we may be able to move higher up the trail to other areas of invasive plants. \nHope to see you out in the Park for this event! \nCheck out the NEEF website for more information about this\, and other events… https://www.neefusa.org/news/registration-national-public-lands-day-2024-volunteer-events-now-open

SUMMARY:Results From the 2024 LA Raptor Study
DESCRIPTION:The 8th L.A. Raptor Study from Daniel S. Cooper\, Nurit Katz & team is currently being compiled in anticipation of the upcoming ZOOM call sharing study results. \nOver eight years of this study\, hundreds of raptor territories have been documented and the study has greatly informed our understanding of how nesting raptors utilize the urban landscape. We’re proud to announce this 2024 dataset is again possible thanks to trained/dedicated community scientists from across the social spectrum who record the data from nests in Griffith Park and surrounding natural areas\, from trees along urban roadways\, and finally\, in residential yards. \n\nSome questions which will be addressed – which species had the most nests and in what tree species?\nWhich species returns to the same nests year after year?\nHow many successful nests were observed in 2024?\n\nDon’t forget to tune in to find the answers to these and other questions! \nPlease register for the ZOOM webinar at https://ucla.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aB2ZXOrRT-eE5XYqD82jPQ
