SUMMARY:Tackling Fern Canyon's Drainage Ditch Invasives
DESCRIPTION:FoGP is heading back to Fern Canyon to work in the drainage ditches\, and eliminate fast-growing invasives. \nOver the years we’ve conducted multiple volunteer events in this location\, beginning in 2014 when Marshall High students originally placed natives in this area. \nAnd our challenge – help natives proliferate as they continue to make inroads\, and help maintain the area for the multiple hikers that use these trails. \nAs usual\, we’re meeting at the Merry-go-round Parking Lot entrance (LOOK FOR OUR SIGNAGE). We’ll be hiking up to the catch basins at the bottom of Fern Canyon and remove invasive plants that tend to overwhelm disturbed areas. We’ll also go further up the trail cleaning the area as we go. We strongly recommend wearing closed-toe shoes or hiking boots\, long pants\, sunscreen\, and please don’t forget the hat. We supply the hand tools\, plastic bags\, work gloves\, and water\, but if you have your own pair of gloves\, we encourage you to bring them. Same with water containers – bring if you have them. \nIf you have not completed one of our Volunteer Agreement forms\, you will need to complete one before you volunteer in the Park. Complete the form\, scan it\, and email back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com. If you’ve already completed / submitted a form in the past\, just sign-in when you arrive at the meeting spot. \nIf you’re interested in organizing a project in the Park for your organization\, club\, company\, or group\, please reach out at Volunteer page on our website – someone will contact you. If you’re available during the week and would like to pitch in\, we have a small group going out on Wednesdays to remove invasive plants in the Park. This group works from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday\, June 6th!

SUMMARY:Let's Take a Hike With Jorge Ochoa
DESCRIPTION:It’s been far too long since the last Hike with Jorge… so we’re very excited that Jorge is available for this hike. He’ll be hiking/talking about the Condor Canyon Fire that destroyed a fair number of acres\, and how this area has regenerated over the course of time. \nWe know of course time heals all and this transformation proves the adage. \nNOTE: If you’ve hiked with Jorge in the past\, you know he stops along the route to discuss various plants\, and the occasional birds and animals\, so kids are encouraged to join… \nFolks are encouraged to ask questions and look deep into the landscape and appreciate the beauty of Griffith Park with fellow nature-lovers. \nAnd of course\, we limit the number so get your rsvp in early. WHILE WE ENCOURAGE ONE OR TWO RSVPS per person\, PLEASE REMEMBER THERE ARE OTHERS WHO WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ATTEND SO LIMIT YOUR RSVPS. IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT WHETHER YOU CAN ATTEND\, DON’T RSVP. \nWe’ll send meet up info on Friday\, April 24\, so if you’ve NOT received the place\, reach out!

River with experts\n• Check out the Miyawaki ‘micro forest’\n• Enjoy equestrian demonstrations\n• Discover historical stories at this often-overlooked area of Griffith Park where Hollywood movie star Bette Davis once resided\n• Even better… this is a FREE event\, so bring the entire family \nFriends of Griffith Park is organizing an event to bring attention to one of the lesser-known but incredibly charming areas of Griffith Park: the Bette Davis Picnic Area/Park. \nThe event will be held Saturday\, March 21 and will feature birdwatching along this portion of the L.A. River\, a visit to the Miyawaki micro forest\, opportunities to learn about the local equestrian community\, and a chance to hear about the fascinating history of this little slice of Griffith Park off the 134 Freeway near Glendale. SUMMARY:Hooray – Back to the Anza Native Garden
DESCRIPTION:For many who volunteered to create this space\, the Anza Native Garden is very special. This garden is smack-dab next to the freeway\, yet provides an opportunity to educate folks about wealth of native plants that\, at one time flourished in Griffith Park. \nVolunteers will be pulling weeds\, invasive grasses and other invasive plants\, and then spread mulch which helps slow the return of weeds\, adds nutrients to the soil\, and reduces evaporation during the warmer months of summer. \nWe always recommend that you wear closed-toed shoes\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. We’ll supply hand tools\, trash bags for weeds\, work gloves\, water\, and cups.  If you have your own work gloves and a water container\, we suggest you bring them.\n\nAnd\, If you’ve not already completed and submitted one of our Volunteer Agreement forms\, you’ll need to do so before you’re allowed to work in the Park per LA Rec and Parks. Please complete the fillable form and email it back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring the completed form to your first project. If you’ve completed this form already\, you will only need to sign in when you arrive at the worksite.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the event… and if this is your third volunteer event you can get your very own spiffy new shirt which you can wear with pride!\n

SUMMARY:Natural History Museum's Community Science – Get SNERCHING
DESCRIPTION:The folks at the Natural History Museum want you to join its annual community science slugfest\, SNERCH to scour and snap photos of snails and slugs from now through March 31. \nFormerly known as Snail Blitz\, SNERCH is the U.S.’s longest-running and largest community science project focused on snails and slugs. Past contributions have uncovered non-native and endangered species. SNERCH is part of the larger SLIME (Snails and Slugs Living in Metropolitan Environments) project on iNaturalist. nhm.org/snail-search for more information. \nCurrently this study – Snails and Slugs Living in Metropolitan Environments (SLIME) is taking place in the LA Area. The ask is easy – while snails and slugs are fairly easy to spot\, they’re also vulnerable to a variety of issues due to their inability to quickly escape from potential harm (who knew\, right) \nWhether they’re in your backyard\, at the local park\, or along your favorite hike\, every snail or slug photographed will help scientists. \nYou can help move this research forward. Click the link above – which takes you directly to NHM’s site. Join the SNERCH fun!

SUMMARY:Volunteer in Fern Dell...
DESCRIPTION:…Afterwards\, Take a Break at Trails Café\nIt’s been awhile since we’ve tackled this area in large numbers so we’re hoping folks can join. \nAnd just think… you can do something good for the Park\, and then treat yourself to coffee and a pastry across the street – a win-win! \nWe’ll be weeding and dropping mulch in the area just across from Trails. The weeds are a product of the past winter rains\, and while we’ve tried to keep them to a minimum\, it’s been a challenge! The mulch will help to keep the weed population down\, and help keep moisture in these plants… especially during the hot summer we’re currently experiencing. \nLook for the signs… we’ll be across the street from Trails Café. If you can find street parking\, great. If not\, drive up the road to #9 Lot and walk down. \nDress for success!… in other words come comfortably dressed. We’ll provide the tools but if you have a fav pair of gloves\, please bring ’em. Also\, wear a hat and sunscreen\, even though this area is fairly shady in the morning. Bring a water bottle and we’ll provide water! \nBTW… we’re required by RAP to have volunteer forms on hand for everyone working in the Park. If you haven’t filled one out\, please do it today and send to FoGP Volunteer Coordinator Ross Arnold. \nHope to see you out in the Park!

SUMMARY:Welcome to 2026!
DESCRIPTION:FoGP volunteers will be doing something different for the first event in Griffith Park. We’ve never really addressed this area before\, so… \nParking Lot #9 is at the top of Fern Dell and this area gets lots of traffic due to the fact it’s the only parking lot in the immediate area. It also gets a fair amount of trash. \nWe”ll be focusing on two areas – invasive weed removal at the entry and then mulch placed to control weeds and rejuvenate plants during hotter months (later in the year). \nWe really hope to see a slew of folks come out to help this area get a bit of love for the new year! \nREMINDER TIME: Please dress comfortably… old clothes\, comfy shoes\, plus a hat and sunscreen. If you have gloves\, bring them\, although we do have gloves on hand. We’ll provide tools and water (if you bring a bottle\, you’re welcome to refill). \nIn order to work in the Park per LA Rec and Parks (RAP)\, a VOLUNTEER FORM (note: this form can be filled out on your computer) is required. Fill out the form\, and either email it back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring the completed form to the event. \nAlready completed a form? Great! Just sign-in when you arrive at the site! \nGet ready\, get set\, join the fun and continue to celebrate the uniqueness of Griffith Park! \nIf you have free time on Wednesday mornings\, we have a crew that spends time in different areas\, removing plants like this… if you would be interested in joining\, please contact bettinaboxall@gmail.com \n  \n  \nFor those unfamiliar\, this is a castor bean plant\, and while quite lovely\, it’s highly invasive in Griffith Park \n

SUMMARY:Once More... Back to the Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:It may sound redundant\, but for a good reason. When there’s any rain\, debris from the streambeds flows down and into the roadway\, making a huge mess\, so keeping them clean is a important challenge. We’ll also continue to tackle invasives at the Bird Sanctuary in preparation of the coming winter rains since they tend to crowd out natives. \nIf you look along the hillsides\, pockets of caterpillar phacelia are clearly evident up the slopes – an indicator that our efforts have been helpful in returning natives to an area devastated by the 2007 fire. We hope everyone will continue to support our efforts. Don’t forget to bring a friend! \nPlease dress comfortably… old clothes\, comfy shoes\, plus a hat and sunscreen. SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day
DESCRIPTION:Make plans to join Friends of Griffith Park as we celebrate NEEF (National Public Lands Day) this year. The FoGP project will take place on Sat.\, Sept. 27th when we’ll meet at the Mineral Wells sign (lots of parking in this area\, btw)\, and walk to the northern end of the picnic area. The Toyon Trail begins here and has seen a huge invasive plant buildup that needs removal. \nWe’ll divide into two groups and focus our efforts on two key areas\, The first area is the catch basin at the top of Mineral Wells that’s filled with invasive plants. The second area is where the Toyon Trail begins\, eventually arriving at the Composting Facility. There’s also a great deal of invasive plants along this trail which requires our attention. \nWe strongly recommend that you wear closed-toed shoes\, long (lightweight) pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. We’ll supply hand tools\, trash bags for weeds\, work gloves\, water\, and cups. However\, we’re encouraging folks to bring cutting tools such as hand pruners\, loopers\, bows\, and hand saws for trimming branches. And if you have your own work gloves and a water container\, we suggest you bring them. Thanks! \nIf you’ve not already completed and submitted one of our Volunteer Agreement forms\, you’ll need to do so before you’re allowed to work in the park per LA Rec and Parks (RAP). Please complete the form\, scan it\, and email it back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring the completed form to this project. If you’ve already completed a form\, you will only need to sign in when you arrive at the worksite.\n\n\nAs always\, we look forward to seeing you at the event! SUMMARY:FoGP will be back at the Anza Garden
DESCRIPTION:Dear Park Volunteers… we hope you’re enjoying your summer –  the hot days and the cool\, balmy evenings…\n\nWe’re going back to the Anza Garden which is located at the northeast corner of Crystal Springs Picnic Area. So head into the Crystal Springs area\, turn left into the parking lot\, and head toward the freeway.\n\nWe’ll be pulling weeds\, invasive grasses and other invasive plants\, and then spreading mulch. This mulch helps to slow the return of weeds and it adds nutrients to the soil and reduces evaporation during the warmer months of summer. There’s also a large tree branch that needs to be removed.\n\nWe strongly recommend that you wear closed-toed shoes\, long (lightweight) pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen. Please complete the form\, scan it\, and email it back to rossarnold1213@gmail.com\, or bring the completed form to your first project. If you’ve completed this form already\, you will only need to sign in when you arrive at the worksite.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the event!\n\nRoss Arnold\, FoGP Volunteer Coordinator
