DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAs folks know… Martin Luther King Day is a day set aside to honor and celebrate the life and works of this civil rights icon.\n\nFoGP volunteers will spend the morning raking leaves and gathering branches along trails\, courtesy of the last big windstorms. \nWe’ll meet across the street from Trails Café (LOOK FOR OUR SIGNAGE) \nIf you’re interested in joining in\, we request several things… we´ll provide tools and gloves\, but if you have a favorite well-worn pair\, please bring them. We urge you to always wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting REALLY DIRTY and don a hat and sunscreen as this IS California. Ross will provide water and paper cups and folks are always welcome to bring their water bottle and fill up. \nIf you’ve volunteered with us in the past\, you know Rec and Parks requires volunteer agreements\, so if you haven’t filled one out yet\, please do so and send along to Ross. SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day is Coming – and You’re Invited!
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day by removing Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) and Indian Tobacco (Lobelia inflata) from the trail near the Tregnan Golf Academy. Park in the Train/Pony Rides Parking Lot and then walk across the street to the picnic table where FoGP will have a Welcome Table set-up. Before anyone may volunteer in Griffith Park\, they must first complete a Volunteer Agreement which will also be available at the table\, if you have not already completed this form. You will be able to sign-in and receive safety instruction and directions to the site. After brief remarks about the project\, we’ll head up the Cadman Trail next to the Golf Academy and divide into small groups to tackle the invasive plants. Invasive plants will be cut down\, with seed pods carefully cut off and bagged. These cut plants will be hauled off by Maintenance Division of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The seed pods will be placed into trash cans. We’re focusing our efforts on several acres! \nWe strongly recommend that everyone wear closed-toed shoes or boots\, long pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen.  We always supply work gloves and water\, but if you have your own gloves and water container\, please bring them. We will have a limited amount of pruning tools so if you have gardening pruning tools such as hand pruners\, loppers\, tree limb saws\, bow saws\, and or pole pruners\, we ask that you please bring them. \nIf we get sufficient numbers of folks volunteering on this day\, we should be able to remove all invasives in the lower area\, and we may be able to move higher up the trail to other areas of invasive plants. \nHope to see you out in the Park for this event! \nCheck out the NEEF website for more information about this\, and other events… https://www.neefusa.org/news/registration-national-public-lands-day-2024-volunteer-events-now-open

SUMMARY:Saturday\, July 13 – Weeding & Mulching Across from Trails Café
DESCRIPTION:Just think… you can do something good for the Park\, and then treat yourself to coffee and a pastry across the street.\nIt’s a win-win! \nWe’ll be weeding and dropping mulch in the garden we planted a few years back. The weeds are a product of the past winter rains\, and while we’ve tried to keep them to a minimum\, it’s been a challenge! The mulch will help to keep the weed population down\, and help keep moisture in these plants… especially during the hot summer we’re currently experiencing. \nLook for the signs… we’ll be across the street from Trails Café. If you can find street parking\, great. If not\, drive up the road to #9 Lot and walk down. \nDress for the heat… in other words come comfortably dressed. We provide the tools but if you have a fav pair of gloves\, please bring ’em. Also\, wear a hat and sunscreen\, even though this area is fairly shady in the morning. DESCRIPTION:Friends of Griffith Park is heading back to the Bird Sanctuary AGAIN as we continue to clear debris from streambeds and tackle more invasives. A quick explanation of why we try to get ahead of the invasives: they tend to crowd out natives. We’ve seen first-hand what happens when invasives are removed – natives thrive! \nThere’s a example of this\, btw… pockets of caterpillar phacelia are evident along slopes – an indicator that our efforts have been helpful returning natives to this area that was devastated by the 2007 fire. SUMMARY:Planting Event Across from Greek Theatre
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading back to the area across the street from the Greek to mulch\, weed and plant more natives to take advantage of winter storms dropping more wet stuff. \nWhile we’ve made some headway in this area\, there’s always more to be done! We’ll be placing more natives so when spring arrives\, you’ll see more blooms along these hillsides\, a testament to volunteer efforts. \nPark in the Greek parking lot and cross the street (look for our signage). SUMMARY:We're Heading Back to the Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:It’s back to the Bird Sanctuary for additional work between the rains… We´ll be cleaning the stream beds of leaves\, branches\, and debris because the heavy rains tend to create floods in this area. We’ll also be pulling weeds which is always great fun. \nAs far as parking near this site; we strongly suggest that you park at the Greek Theater and walk up. It’s roughly a 10-minute walk unless you — like me — walk slow. \nWe highly recommend that you wear long pants\, bring a hat (and if you have a favorite pair of gloves\, bring ’em\, and don’t forget the sunscreen. We’ll supply all of the tools needed.
